谢家荣——勘查中国石油地质的先驱

XIE JIARONG——A FORERUNNER OF PETROLEUM GEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION

谢家荣(1898—1966)是我国早期卓有成就的地质学家之一,是勘查中国石油地质的先驱。早在1921年,他就和翁文灏一起调查了玉门油田,以后又先后勘查过陕北、四川、台湾等地的石油地质,发表石油地质调查报告及论著30余种。在《江南探油论》(1948年)一文中,明确提出中国石油的分布,决不限于西北一隅的论点;在《东北矿产概论》(1949年)等文章中,则认为在日本人没有找到石油的北满地区,有找到石油的希望。1949年以后,他在培养石油地质人才、组织和指导全国石油勘查方面,都作出了重要的贡献。

Xie Jiarong,an outstanding geologist,is a forerunner of petroleumgeological exploration in China.Early in 1921,he prospected with WengWenhao the Yumen Oilfield,and afterwards made successive petroleumgeological surveys in northern Shaanxi,Sichuas and Taiwan.He has publi-shed more than thirty reports and articles on petroleum geology.In thearticle On Petroleum Exploration in Regions South of the Yangtze River(1948)he pointed out explicitly that the distribution of petroleum inChina was definitely not confined to northwest China,and held in thepaper A Survey of Mineral Products of Northeast China(1949)that itwas possible to find oil in the northern area of Manchuria where theJapanese had failed to do so.Since the founding of the People's Republicof China,Xie Jiarong has made great contributions towards fosteringqualified petroleum geologists,and organizing and guiding petroleumexploration in China.
