Different surface treatment on the crystals influents the total light output, and consequently affects the performance of the detectors for positron emission tomography (PET). In order to optimize the performance of a new depth of interaction (DOI) detector, we have focused on the comparison of light output and timing resolution of the detectors consisting of narrow LSO crystals with different surface conditions. The results of this study can provide useful information to implement LSO detectors to practical PET systems.
