本文叙述机械工程在国民经济中的重要地位 ,提出的精密化、综合化、网络化、智能化分别是机械工程发展的核心、途径、急需和方向 ;着重介绍了当今世界机械工程的最新发展 ,预测了电子和信息产业将跃升为机械工业的主导产业 ;对我国当前经济改革和机械工业的发展 ,提出必须面向网络时代和全球化经济等重要建议。

The paper deals with important status of mechanical engineering in the national economy and its future developments.It is clearly shown that the precision,the synthesis,the network and the intelligence are the kernel,the way,the need and the direction for developing mechanical engineering.The paper also puts forward that electronic and information industry will jump into dominant position in mechanical industry,and the mechanical engineering must adaptively face the network era and the global economy. The paper is divided into four parts going to be published at the 2001No.1～4 issues.
