Teachers must be continual learners in this era of rapid change in the development of knowledge, of research on learning, and of educational technologies. Most professional development for teachers is inadequate and inaccessible, however. It is often out-dated, too abstract, remote from the realities of teachers' practice, and devoid of sustained coaching and support. Even such inadequate opportunities for continued learning are unavailable to many teachers. The Internet holds promise as a means for overcoming the inadequacies and inaccessibility of professional development for teachers. But technology alone will not change educational practice. Internet-based resources must be combined with activities and structures that sustain teachers' thoughtful engagement with new ideas, encourage the application of new practices, develop collegial relationships, and support virtual communities of practice. In this presentation, I will describe and analyze ways of using the Internet to provide professional development. I will include a summary of research on effective designs for both learning and professional development, along with the features of Internet technologies that are particularly valuable in enacting such designs. Interactive online learning environments and related online courses, developed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will be used to illustrate these themes.
