Within only the past decade, an entirely new avenue in cataclysmic variable (CV) research has emerged with the first, ground - based and space - based spectroscopic observations of the underlying white dwarf accrters (the explosive central engines) in cataclysmic variables. These spectroscopic detections have opened new frontiers of investigation into the accretion physics in the stellar envelope, angular momentum 'transfer and CV evolution.This review will cover the full range of cataclysmic variable white dwarf research including the following: (1) surface temperatures; (2) Accretional heating and cooling measurements;(3) the properties and effects of absorbing curtains (disk upper atmospheres) in high inclination CVs; (4) white dwarf rotational velocities and associated implications; (5) white dwarf photospheric chemical abundances; (6) accretion belts and; (7) accretion simulations.
