The smoothness characteristics of printing paper surface and the relationship between these characteristics and printing quality are introduced，and different testing methods of paper surface smoothness are also presented． The characteristics of testing instruments and experiment results showed that the relationship between the testing results of P．P．S and the printing effects is the best，so P．P．S tester should be developed and used widely in China as soon as possible．
