Reasons for the Formation of Beijing Old City's Oblique Streets

主要通过对相关文献、地图、碑刻资料的分析 ,结合前人的成果 ,对北京旧城斜街的形成提出三点看法 :1 )因湖泊面积缩小 ,形状变化 ,原来的湖岸变成斜街。 2 )街道本身即在旧河道上 ,或沿河道沟渠延伸 ,形成斜街。 3)在关厢地区 ,人们为进出城方便 ,需要走最短距离 。

By analyzing some documents,maps,and inscriptions,and referring to other scholars' achievements, it puts forward three main reasons for the formation of Beijing old city's oblique streets which are as follows: 1) The former lakes shrank and their shapes changed,so the banks had turned into oblique streets. 2) The streets themselves lie in the former river\|beds or extend along river, which are oblique. 3) The residents in the suburbs of Beijing City came into or went out from the city by short cuts for convenience,which formed some oblique streets.
