The principle and characteristics of seven kinds of superconducting fault current limiters are illustrated in detail. They are saturable magnetic core type, diode bridge type, resistive type, transformer type, hybrid type, 3-phase reactor type and magnetic-shield type. The history and recent development of SFCL are also reviewed. The most important problems for applying SFCL to electric power systems are given.
