The Third National Health and Nutrition ExaminationSurvey(NHANES Ⅲ)provides a unique means of samplinghuman DNA from a representative U.S.population targetedfor health examination.The proqrdm intvolves gatheringeach participant's health and nutritional history andadministering a battery of physical and biochemical tests.This 6-year program to collect blood from about 20,000participants 12 years of age and older will end in late1994. The NHANES Ⅲ CeLl(DNA)bank is a unique nationalresource because of its large size,nationallyrepresentative nature,capacity for longitudinal follow-upof study individuals,and amount of information on eachparticipant.A mechanism to share this resource with thescientific community will be established.
