兰州是中国西北的重要城市之一。２０世纪前半叶，兰州的城市近代化在艰难曲折中取得了一定程度的进步，但较东南沿海城市而言，仍显得迟滞．究其原因，主要是由于兰州地理环境的封闭，发展腹地的缺乏，本土化人才的匮乏，市民文化思想观念的落后和国内政治局势的动荡所致。
