The genetic research on the characters in good quality indica rice and the approach to breeding for good quality indica rice in the early season in Guangdong was reviewed. The breeding strategy for good quality early cropping indica rice in South China for the future was discussed. It was pointed out that the emphasis should be put on breeding for good quality indica rice with medium amylose content in Guangdong, and the systematic research on the excellent quality characters and the characteristics of higher photosynthetic efficiency in elite US rice varieties should be conducted in order to incorporate elite US germplasm into local germplasm, and improve quality characters as well as yield in the breeding program.
