Objective To investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in brain tissue after traumatic brain injury, and to explore the relationship between the expression of VEGF and the degree of brain injury. Methods VEGF expression in 30 patients with acute traumatic brain injury was examined by immunohistochemical assay, and 5 normal brain tissues served as control. The degree of brain injury was checked microscopically. Results The expression of VEGF was seen in 73.3% patients with brain injury, yet the positive rate of VEGF expression was 20% in normal brain tissue. There was significant difference between them( P < 0.05 ). The positive correlation between denaturalized and necrotic neurons and the positive rate of VEGF expression( r = 0.634 8 , P < 0.05 ) was found when denaturalized and necrotic neurons didn't exceed 40%, however, there existed dignificant negative correlation between them( r = -0.665 7 , P < 0.05 ) when more than 40% neurons were denaturalized and necrotic. The correlation between VEGF expression and patients'GCS was not observed. Conclusion The current results suggest that VEGF expression is induced by brain ischemia after traumatic brain injury. VEGF may participate in neuroprotection after brain injury.
