在金文中，月是一个具有多种意义的同形字，后来都写作月。作为合体字的部件，它所表示的意义有：（１）月或夕，（２）肉，（３）动物的嘴，（４）人的嘴。因此，在分析有月形的金文合体字时，应区别对待。
