本文把战国以前称为前散文时代 ,在这一时代 ,文化对散文萌生的影响是多重的 ,主要是神话文化、卜筮文化和政治文化。神话文化之下的散文其实是追忆的虚构散文 ,它对散文的影响在于叙事和丰富的想象力 ;卜筮文化下的卜辞和卦爻辞因语言的精练、语义的朦胧而具有诗化的色彩 ;政治文化之下的记事散文在叙事说理中有比喻、引用、排比的运用 ,庄重里蕴含有语言的生气。它们从不同的方面构成前散文时代散文萌生的特征。
