The common structural inadequacy in the recent studies of the history of Chinese aesthetics has resulted in a lack of insights into the intrinsic laws governing the development of classical Chinese aesthetics. A reflection on the methodology hitherto used in the study of Chinese aesthetics is therefore necessary. It is a reflection on the different interests underlining aesthetics: the one that exists between man and art, as in the Western experience, and the other between man and nature, as in the Chinese experience. Two major breakthroughs and three important syncretisms in the history of Chinese aesthetics are spotted and studied in this essay.
