Wang Chuanshan's View on “Poetic Quality”

王船山鉴于明朝人学唐诗只学到其腔调形式 ,一味模仿 ,没有真实感情 ,因此提倡“神韵”,写作者对景物的艺术美和真感受 ,这比模仿形式好得多。但这只能聊备诗中之一格 ,不能写大的题材和复杂的社会生活 。

The people in the Ming Dynasty only got the tone and from through invariable imitation when they studied Tang Poems, without any revealation of true feelings. In view of this, Wang advocated 'Poetic Quality' revealing the artistic beauty of the scenery and the author's true feelings on seeing it. This is much better than imitating the form, however, it can only be suitable for some minor subject matters in poetry, with its limitations, it doesn't apply to major themes or the complicated society.
