Translating New Chinese Words and Expressions into English

改革开放以来 ,汉语中涌现出大量的新词汇。如何将新词汇译成准确、地道的英语 ,使国际社会对中国的国情和发展有及时、正确、客观的了解 ,是翻译工作的重要任务。本文通过大量实例 ,说明汉语新词汇的英译必须首先深入理解每个新词语的内涵 ,熟知英语国家的文化背景和习惯用法 ,在此基础上努力做到形神兼顾 ,才能避免“望文硬译”或出现“中式英语”。

A large number of new Chinese words and expressions have sprung up since China's reform and opening-up drive.It is of vital importance to translate these words and expressions into English faithfully and idiomatically so as to help the international community gain a timely and objective understanding of the epoch making development in China and extend her influence on the outside world. With many examples of translation,the paper discusses the factors affecting the quality of Chinese-English translation. Its conclusion is that the key to the quality translations lies in the deep understanding of the connotation of the target words and expressions,full awareness of differecnes in culture as well as the ways of expression and modes of thinking between Chinese and English and that only in this way can it be hoped to avoid interlinear transltion and Chinglish.
