Fossil energy is the major energy of the world now. It will remain so in decades to come. Acquirability, economy and cleanliness are the key factors in the future energy use. This article presents an analysis of the role of coal in the energy structure from the angle of resources, environment and economy. The article holds that coal will remain indispensable to China in a considerably long period of time to come. The article also holds that the development, promotion and spread application of clean coal technology will receive sufficient attention in due course.
