Two new copper smelters, which employ the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process, are now under construction in Indonesia and in South Korea. Both of these basic design concepts followed the same process of Naoshima smelter in Japan, which was modemized and commissioned in 1991, while incorporating some modifications based on the recent actual operating performance of the process. On the other hand, for future application of the process, which is capable of higher smelter throughput, basic engineering studies take into consideration the experience gained at the Naoshima's commercial scale operation and also the results of relevant laboratory experiments.
