“总体文学”是比较文学发展进程中，最早由欧美学者提出并加以讨论的重要概念。它的英文对应词是ｇｅｎｅｒａｌ ｌｉｔｅｒａ－ｔｕｒｅ。中文翻译有的也称“一般文学”或“普通文学”。如今在全球“跨文化研究”的背景下，“总体文学”不仅再次成为比较文学学科发展的重要参照，而且将有助于从总体上重新把握“文学的人类性”和“人类的文学性”。

In the developing course of comparative literature, the concept of general literature was put forward earliest by American and European scholars. Nowadays, under the background of transculture research,general literature not only be- comes the main important reference of the development of comparative literature, but also benefits to restudy the humanism of literature and literarinessof human.
