During his lifetime Hardy wrote over 40 war poems, some of which enjoy great popularity. His profound and penetrating criticism and his historical perspective of war, and his truthful depiction of the psychological pains that war brings to people, his conscientious exploration of the conditions of human ex- istence, his grave sense of crisis over the future of human beings and his distinctively modern artistic techniques, all these make his war poems prominent among his poetry as well as the war poetry of Great Britain.
