摘要
1999 the last year of this century and this millennium, is the International Year of Older Persons, which was declared at the resolution 47/5 of the UN Assembly in 1992, with the theme being "Towards A Society for All Ages". Abstract What is most important for the International Year of Older Persons is to increase understanding of the old-age issue by the whole society and to reach consensus on the status of the older persons in the society, the needs of the older persons to realize self-development and self-value, or simply speaking, the older persons being equal members of the society. In fact, issues related to old-age or population ageing are largely issues of looking at the value of the older persons. A clearing up of the existing misconceptions and negative or pessimistic views thus becomes necessary and important. Four scholars from different disciplines are invited to contrbute to such a topic in this "Population and Development Forum".
