诗歌的继承关系不仅是艺术形式和创作方法的继承，同时也包括内容的继承．安史之乱后，唐朝失去了陇右、河西和湟水流域，收复河湟是中唐爱国诗人的重要题材．靖康之变，南宋失去淮河以北广大领土，收复中原是南宋爱国诗的重要内容之一，南宋诗人借鉴唐人，继承和发展了爱国诗词。
