Virginia Woolf's short story A Mark on the Wall is considered by literary critics as a masterpiece of stream of consciousness. This paper holds that the story expresses feminism and modernism, which are more essential than its writing technique of stream of consciousness and merits our attention.In the opinion of Virginia Woolf, modernism is defined by beautifying “the queer and incoherent fragments of thought', a psychological realism that is an imaginary existence more realistic than the objective reality. The traditional “tool of Edwardian period' serves the males so that the females must use “the bisexual' language to wage “ an ideological fight' to break the tradition.
