Through analyzing the philosophical and political implications of the “wall” in both Mending the Wall and As I Grew Older, the alienation distortion, and suppression of human nature by modern civilization and segregation are revealed. On the one hand, people need the “wall” to protect themselves; on the other hand, they long to destroy the “wall” to build up life of friendship and equality. The negative impacts of the “wall” on people′s lives and the necessity of destroying it are explored, thus the poets′ wishes for equality and harmony between people and their political ambition of opposing segregation revealed.
