Three Sources of Literary Genres

《论语》所记是孔子的轶事 ,开志人小说体例的先河 ,艺术技巧达到了相当水平 ,是志人小说的源头。《史记》中的《日者列传》 ,从形式到内容都应视为小品文 ,并非一般的人物传记 ,明代刘基的《卖柑者言》与之十分相似。应亨是晋人 ,不是东汉人 ,他的《赠四王冠诗》不是现存最早的文人五言诗。

Lunyu (The Master's Teachings), which is a detailed account of Confucius' anecdotes, creates a new literary genre: novel on people. The writing technique of Lun Yu is remarkably mature. Rizhe Liezhuan of Shiji (The Records of Historians), in both form and content, should be viewed more as an essay than as a biographical account. It is similar to The Story of a Tangerine Seller by Liu Xie of Ming Dynasty. Poems Dedicated to Four Wang's in Commemoration of Their Adulthood by Yin Heng, a native of Jin Dynasty, not of Dong Han, is not the earliest five-word poem we know of today.
