Objective:To establish the normal value of motor unit number estimation (MUNE) of the mediannerve innervated thener muscles, to study its relationship with the age and sex and test the reproducibility of the technique. Methods:A fully automated incremental stimulating technique was used to estimate the motor unit number of median innervated thenar muscles, 60 normal subjects without nerve and muscle disease were detected.Results:①The normal MUNE value of median innervated thenar muscles was 300±83(50 33±20 81years old) MUNE of and three age groups were 353±63(20-39years old)、322±54(40-59years old) and 216±59(60-88years old) respectively;②The MUNE value of median innervated thenar muscles had negative correlation with age and had no correlation with sex. MUNE value of median innervated thenar muscles decreased significantly in subjects above the age of 60 as compared with those with age less than 60(P<0 001).MUNE difference of thenar muscles in two times of test were not significant(P=0 3).Conclusions:The MUNE of median nerve innervated thenar muscles recorded by automatic incremental stimulating was 300±83.It might be decreased with the increase of ages, esp in persons with the age above 60 years. Age should be taken into consideration in MUNE recording. MUNE of thenar muscles has good reproducibility and reliability and have no correlation with sex. [
