The fierce competition of the market accelerates the product life cycle. Information technology is pushing the reform in the manufacturing field and the teaching of manufacturing as well as engineering in the institutes of high education. Emphasis used to be placed on the training of expertise in one particular item in the students' graduation projects design with less attention paid to the whole process of designing a complete product or to the manufacturing cycle. To be in line with the new objectives and to exploit new approaches and methods in our teaching, the Mechanical Engineering School of Tongji University and the Industrial Center of Hong Kong Technology University cooperated in joint instructions given to the undergraduates in their graduation project design. Chosen product's rapid realizing as the topic, the joint instructions made use of the net supporting environment, established virtual classrooms and virtual laboratories to carry on distance multimedia teaching and interactive instructions with corresponding courses. The complementary advantages and sharing of resources between Shanghai and Hong Kong enabled the students to get involved in the whole production process from the design of the product to its realization. Problem solving ability of the students was put as the core purpose of their project design to meet the requirements of the demand of qualified personnel in the new era. The graduation project was to design a watch crust. The teacher instructed students to go through the stages of product outline design, rapid prototype manufacturing (RP), rapid patternmaking (RP), and the reversed engineering (RE) with procedures of designing, communicating, modifying, rapid prototype machining/stakeout. The concrete designing procedure was conducted in Tongji University. Communicating and modifying were done by way of the Internet while the prototype machining/stakeout was carried out in the Industrial Center of Hong Kong Technology University, exploring designing and rapid prototype machining/stakeout in different locations. The project made full use of advanced telecommunication technology, combining the intellectual resources in China's Mainland with expertise techniques in Hong Kong. Thus we were able to share the manufacturing resources and believed this is a new mode of educational reform.
