The work of American missionaries to China at early times was obstructed due to the mission-prohibition and closed-door policies of the Qing government and the influence of the Chinese traditional culture. Therefore, the activities of American missionaries sent to China at early times were permeated with advocation of tough policy, agita- tion of public opinions and the imposition of unequal treaties on the Qing government.
