Objectives This study were to report ① the survival rate and outcome after cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an intensive care unit.② The relation between successful CPR and patients with acute illness or chronic medical conditions and age. Methods We present a retrospective review of all patients undergoing CPR in emergency intensive care unit during 5 year period(1995~1999).Results One hundred and fifty-three patients received CPR(mean age 59 years). There were ninety older patients(≥60 years),although 21(23.3%)of the older were initial resuscitated, only 2 (2.2%) ultimately survived from hospital discharge. The older who were successfully resuscitated were different from the patients who were not successfully resuscitated in length of ICU stay, but sex and age were similar among them. The primary contributing diagnoses at time of admission were cardiovascular-cerebral vascular disease in 29(32%),infection disease in 21 (23%),respiratory disease in 11 (12%),gastrointestinal disease 11(12%),malignancy in 8(9%).Conclusions Age was not independently associated with a outcome after CPR in the elderly.Cardiovascular-cerebral vascular disease, infection disease and respiratory disease were common among patient who undergoing CPR in ICU.
