The Man in the Sheath' is one of Anton Chekhov's masterpieces among his short novels. Different from traditional opinion of seeing 'The Man in the Sheath' as a work of realism,this article attemps to consider it as a perfect combination of realism and symbolism.In this short novel,Chekhov employs symbol,implication,mataphor,contrast and other devices to develop the theme,which help to arm the novel with the seriou social problem,thus provide it with a deep realistic meaning.All these are illustrated through well chosen examples.In this article Chekhov's symbolism and the conventional symbolism are distinguished.Chekhov's symbolism is analyzed as an active sign,a token of beauty.This beauty with the strength of goodness arouses the spirit of up going in people's heart.
