薛允升是清末著名律学家。《读例存疑》是他精研《大清律例》的重要成果。此书全面而深刻地反映了他的法贵简易持平、有治法尤贵有治人、律例应当允协划一、刑罚世轻世重因时损益等法律思想 ,对清末修律产生过重大影响。

Xue Yunsheng is a famous legalist of late Qing Dynasty. The book 'Questions about laws of Qing Dynasty' is the result of his careful study of the Code of Qing Dynasty in connection with the judicial practice of the time. Some of his important and instructive thoughts about laws, such as preferring the simpleness and equitableness of laws, preferring the people who enforce laws to the laws themselves, stressing that laws and relugations should be harmonious and uniform and that the degree of criminal punishment should be adjustable in accordance with changes of situations, are fully and thoroughly reflected in the book. This book also has great influence upon the reversion of the laws in late Qing Dynasty.
