Aristotle's <Theory of Poetry>:

Theory of Poetry>is the earliest masterpiece of esthetics of the West.It philosophically refines the permanently charming Greek spirit of art,probes realistically the historical evolution of Greek art,summarizes the laws of its development and principles of its creation,and affirms the social function of art.It sets up,by the wisdom of a philosopher,the first western system of comparison,a rational theory of esthetics,and expounds the essence of art,the principles of artistic creation as represented by tragedies,and the function of art in recognizing society and life,teaching ethics,and in molding elevated aesthetic sentiments.It distinctly embodies the spirit of the true,the good and the beautiful,exerting profound,far\|reaching influence on Western esthetic thoughts and Western theories of art.Many of its reasonable views are still valuable for reference today.
