Small World is an important novel written by David Lodge, an English famous writer. It is regarded by many scholars as a Western Enclosed City . Since it involves various kinds of literary theories, such as new Marxism, feminism, pan-sexism, deconstrucitonism, it is taken as a key work of post-modernism. However, the author of this paper thinks that it is both a post-modernist work and a modernist work. The modernity is best crystalised in its construction of the plot and characterization. In fact, modernism and post-modernism are mingled together, thus forming its unique features of art.
