Elegance" and Readers in Translation

“雅”作为系统翻译理论的一分子 ,在翻译实践中占据非常重要的战略地位 ,是译文维持其生命力的保证。“雅”代表译文的文字水平 ,以“雅”译“雅” ,以“俗”译“俗” ,不仅符合翻译活动的初衷 ,更是译者考虑读者接受能力的体现。在“信”“达”基础上 ,为充分考虑读者在翻译中的参与作用 ,严复提出了他关于“雅”的理论 ,这是一个极具理论价值的创见。

As one of the components of a systematic translation theory, ' elegance' plays a vital role in maintaining the vitality of the original. It is required that we have ' elegance to elegance' translation which tally with the nature of translation. In view of readers' acceptability, Yan Fu put forward his idea of ' Elegance' in addition to ' faithfulness' and ' intelligibility', showing his great concern about his readers. Undoubtedly this is a creative theoretical idea in translation.
