Discovered in the early 20th century at Dunhuang, Chili Hsüan An Lo Ching is a Nestorian manuscript of the Tang Dynasty. Since its discovery it had been possessed by Li Shengduo, an independent book-collector. Laier it was sold to some Japanese, and not until 1958 were photographs of part of its content released. In 1929, the manuscript was transcribed and published by Dr. T. Haneda in Japan. In 1934, the ancient copy was restored and published by another Japanese scholar, Dr. P. Y. Saeki, who also translated it into English. It is upon Dr. Sacki's restoration that most versions of the manuscript are based. This paper traces the publishing process of the original manuscript, pointing out that Saeki's version does not accord with standard procedures of ancient documents restoration, and it contains some errors. It is held that before photographs of the full content of the original manuscript are released, studies concerning the manuscript should be based on Dr. Haneda's transcript first published in 1929.
