A Critical View of Wei Yuan's Remarks on Literature and Writing of Poetry

魏源的文学思想是由其今文经学和社会改良的思想而生发的。具体到其诗歌创作中，则可说特色有二：一为重功利、重教化的反映时事之作；一为以"复古"为创新而风格奇崛险怪的刻画山水之作。魏源的诗歌正是以其雄浑遒劲、气势奋发、富孕时代感而风流于一代诗坛。

Wei Yuan's remarks on literature was originated from his modern study of Confucian classics and his thought of social reform. For his wr iting of poems, there are two types of his characteristic poems to be mentioned: those poems reflecting the current affairs by advocating utility and educationa l enlightening and those depicting the mountains and waters in peculiar and quee r styles so as to be innovative for 'returning to the ancients'. It is just wi th their powerful vigour, overwhelming manner and strong sense of the era that W ei Yuan's poems were able to enjoy great popularity in the world of poetry in h is days.
