Dai Tong's study of 'Shuo Wen Jie Zi' takes a very important place in the history of Chinese philology. In 'Anecdotes of Six Books', Dai points out many shortcomings in 'Shuo Wen Jie Zi' by means of the inscriptions on ancient bronze objects and documents from other sources. It is by massively citing from different editions of the book, Dai proofread the text and transformed the division of Shuo Wen Jie Zi. As a result, he established a novel system of grading texts in order of styles. In addition, he established a new theory in the field of traditional theory on 'Six Books' based on the reality of Chinese philology. In a word, Dai's contribution to the study of 'Shuo Wen Jie Zi' with his brilliant results of research is universally recognized.
