In this paper, the surface modeling of complex surface in reverse engineering is systematically studied. The complex surfaces are sorted into three categories: the generalized plane surface, the generalized cylindrical surface and the generalized spherical surface. One reverse method - map parameter splitting method is presented, which uses seven steps: (1) the definition of the map-guiding parameter surface is selected based on the featur es of the three categories; (2) measured point sets are mapped onto the guiding parameter surface based on the guiding parameter surface so as to create the map ping parameter field; (3) determine the parameters and the region of their value s in the parameter field; (4) based on the region of parameter value, divide the parameter field and measured point sets into some subblocks and subsets; (5) es tablish the approach plane by least square for each measuring point subset. (6) build surface grid points using the approach planes; and (7) use the non- unif orm rational B-spline to get complex surface model.
