To Explain the Meaning of "Lu" (鲁)

“鲁”字从“鱼”构形，其义当与“鱼”有关。但前人的一些解说，却有以讹传讹之嫌。查阅甲骨文、金文等古文字，确认“鲁”的构形是“从鱼从口，鱼变声”，其本义是“味美”。由“味美”引申出“嘉”、“美”之义，再引申出“大”义等等，从而整理出“鲁”的词义系统，

The Character 'lu' （鲁） picks the form of 'yu' （鱼） Therefore, its meaning should show some relationship with that of 'yu'. However, its erroneous explanations by some predecessors have been widely spread. Consulting ancient inscriptions such as the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of the Shang Dynasty and the inscriptions on ancient bronze objects, it can be assured that the form of 'lu' follows those of'yu' and 'kou'(口), and the fish (yu,鱼) can also make a sound. The original meaning of lu is 'delicious (to the taste)', which extends to the meanings of 'good' and 'beautiful', and further extends to the meaning of 'big' and so forth. Thus, the systematic meanings of 'lu' can be sorted out.
