Qi(air) is a core category pervasively used to cover various heuristic areas in Chinese culture. It reveals the view held by the ancient Chinese of the world itself. This article tries to expound the origin and development of the conception of wen qi (literary air) by demonstrating how it was initially used to describe human begins, then to identify writers’ personality traits and finally to interpret the features of literary works themselves.
