《神思》篇是论述艺术想像的专题论文。主要讲艺术想像的特征，以及进行艺术想像的重要条件、要求和建议。虚拟性、具象性和抒情性是艺术想像的三大特质。神思不能等同于构思，也不能等同于形象思维。刘勰论文具有描述性，运用各种形式的比喻来说明道理，运用的比喻，不是论述的对象。
