新时期前由于政治对文学的禁锢，当代工业题材小说一直以“阶级斗争”为主题。新时期以来在80年代的工业题材创作中，既展示了工业体制改革中改革与保守的矛盾，揭示了改革的艰难，也反映了人自身观念变革的过程，塑造了工业战线的“新人”形象，展示了80年代丰富多彩的社会生活。到了90年代，工业题材小说主题进一步书写人的世俗生活，关注人的生存状况，而且描绘了人们于艰窘时世中对理想追寻的轨迹。
Due to the restriction of literature by politics before the New Age (after Great Cultural Revolution)，the theme of contemporary industry一subjected novels was always being 'class struggle'. Thanks to the ideological emancipation since the New Age，the theme of this kind of novels differed dramatically. The industry一subjected novels produced in the 80's expose the contradiction between reform and conservation，reflect the changing course of man's idea，create the characters of 'new man in industry'，and reveal the colourful social life in the 80's. In the 90's，the theme of industry一subjected novels further illustrates common life of ordinary people，focuses on their surviving condition，and portrays their pursuit of ideals in hardship .
