The author presents the idea in this treatise that characters cut in intaglio exist com- monly in popular stories printed in Song and Yuan Dynasty. While the characteres have disappeared in story-teller's script and traditional Chinese novel of Ming Dynasty. These characters appear in two ways in Song and Yuan poplar stories. The author studies the ways of the characters' appear- ance, distributions and functions and concludes that these characters function mainly as striking cues. The cues are teller-oriented rather than reader-oriented like the chapter title in the Ming no- vels. The author therefore concludes that the existence of the characters shows that popular stories in Song and Yuan Dynasty are the tellers' manuscripts, which have not been modified by literati. Characters cut in intaglio, as a phenomenon of the earlier novel development, can be an important appraisal basis of the Yuan story.
