As a major nineteenth century English novelist, Thomas Hardy is famous for his u- nique writing style in his tragic novels. And coincidence is one of them. As an important method to interpret bis philosophy and attitude towards life, coincidence distingguishes Hardy from other Victo- rian novelists by the vivid descriptions of the ideas, emotions and values of life of people in the changing era.
