Meso-scale heavy rainfall in the Meiyu front is main meteorological disaster along the Yangtze River as well as main reason causing the seriousflooding of Yangtze River in 1998. This project is one of the national key basic research projects running since 1999. The study progresses in the last two years are remarkable. The causes of the Yangtze River flooding in 1998 were basically clear now and the physical models and formation mechanisms of the large-scale anomalous circulation inducing heavy rainfall and the meso-scale heavy rainfall system in the Meiyu front were preliminarily revealed; the progress has been made with studies of the advanced sounding theories and techniques such as meteorological sattellite and Doppler radar, especially the cloud-drived wind study which keeps ahead internationally; the study for embracing, assimilation and integration of multi-sounding data sets from sattellite, radar and conventional observed network has been advanced in all aspects, especially three dimensional variation assimilation; new generation meso-scale numerical model with high-resolution and non-static has been developing.
