The advances of vascular biology gave us new insights into the understanding of the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. Primary prevention of hypertension has successfully reduced the incidence and mortality of cardiovascular diseases. This update reviews the current knowledge of the progress in the research fields of hypertension.
