The paper expounds the developing process of packaging engineering from the primitive stage to traditional and modern .The formation of the packaging technology system and its functions and position in modern economic activities are analyzed.The contents of modern packaging science ,its unique theories, design methods, and special technologies are discussed.A survey is also given on the development and situations of packaging engineering education home and abroad,with helpful ideas given on the promotion of packaging engineering education in China.
