The method of selecting variables in discriminant analysis is discussed in this paper. The separability showing the difference of the collective is defined and then based on this definition, the separability function and three of its properties are given. By using this function, an objective function used to select variables can be defined. In the last section, a procedure is given and used to select the variables.
