This paper presents our analysis of the meaning of the declarative tag question. After revising the precondition of DTQ, we propose that the basic meaning of DTQ is to request the hearer to confirm the proposition expressed in the declarative part, thus conveying speakers' uncertainty to the proposition. It proves adequate to explain the various discourse functions of D TQ both in English and Chinese with this generalization.
